Travel insurance loss

What should I do in case of an accident or sudden illness during a travel?

If you have purchased a health insurance cover from Salva, we propose 3 options:

  • You should pay the bills on the spot to the medical facility, if possible, and retain all invoices and receipts for any drugs prescribed by the doctor. After returning to Estonia you should notify Salva of the event; you can complete the initial loss notification here. Salva compensates the incurred costs on the basis of the completed loss application and submitted invoices.
  • If medical costs are significant and you are not able to pay them on the spot, you should contact Salva. Salva sends a letter of guarantee to the medical facility (the doctor) and pays the invoices related to the treatment directly to the doctor.
  • Salva’s cooperation partner in foreign countries is SOS International (tel: 0045 38 48 93 20, e-mail: sos [at] sos.dk) that provides 24/7 assistance to the clients of Salva’s with a travel insurance policy. Professional customer service staff of SOS advise on further actions, communicate with the doctor and provide confirmations regarding the payment of medical bills.

What should I do when I have to cancel my travel due to sudden illness or an accident?

  • You should contact your travel agency and Salva and notify them of cancelling your travel. You can complete the initial loss notification here.
  • Salva sends you the loss application form and any further instructions specifying the necessary documents to be submitted for loss adjustment.
  • You should contact the doctor and request the issuance of a medical certificate that specifies the date of illness and the diagnosis.

For example: A family has planned a one-week travel to Bulgaria. The child gets an acute viral disease few days before the travel. The child is taken to a doctor who prescribes the treatment and issues a medical certificate specifying the diagnosis and the date of illness. The Father notifies the travel agency and Salva of cancelling the travel, and receives a loss application form from Salva. The Father returns the completed application form together with the medical certificate and the invoice confirming the cost of travel to the loss adjuster. The compensation is paid in 15 days.

90% of cases are currently settled by communicating via e-mail and there is no need for the client to appear in person.

What should I do when I have purchased connecting flights and the first flight is delayed, forcing me to miss the next flight?

  • You should request a certificate from the air carrier regarding the delayed flight.
  • You should purchase a new plane ticket as required. If there are no flights on the same day, the costs incurred for staying overnight are compensated.
  • You should contact your travel agency and Salva and notify them of missing the flight. You can complete the initial loss notification here.
  • Salva sends you the loss application form and any further instructions specifying the necessary documents to be submitted for loss adjustment.

What should I do when my luggage/suitcase has been damaged because of the transport company?

  • You should request a certificate from the airport specifying the damages caused to your luggage.
  • You should notify Salva of damages caused to your luggage. You can complete the initial loss notification here.
  • You should turn to the representative office of Salva Kindlustus. The loss adjuster evaluates the level of incurred losses, and the luggage is either repaired or compensated, depending on the damage.

What should I do when my luggage was stolen?

  • When staying in a foreign country, you should turn to the nearest police station and register the event.
  • You should notify Salva of the stolen luggage. You can complete the initial loss notification here.
  • The loss is compensated depending on the value of stolen items and the sum insured pursuant to the luggage insurance cover.
